The real determining factor of whether or not a cookie establishment is worth a visit is if they can bake up an impressive chocolate chip cookie. Schmackary's succeeds and then some.
Originally an online delivery business, Schmackary's now bakes and serves its treats out of its Hell's Kitchen storefront. The menu features over 45 types of "modern cookie classics" and "seasonal cookie sensations" that rotate daily, including signature flavors such as Maple Bacon, Red Velvet, and Fluffler Nutter. But what really had us goin was the classic chocolate chip, which sealed the deal with light touches of sea salt.
At first bite, the cookie is crisp, but as your teeth sink deeper, you start hitting a dense, chewy center filled with melted semi-sweet chocolate chips. These are the sort of cookies that don't just scream butter by painting your fingers with grease. Instead, what stood out was the moist, brown sugar base and the unexpected kisses of sea salt that tantalized our taste buds and had us diving in for seconds (and thirds).
We also tried three other signature cookies. The Oatmeal Scotchie leaned a bit on the sweet side, with a soft, oatmeal, cinnamon, and vanilla body filled with crunchy butterscotch chips. The Peanut Butter Cup was pleasantly moist, chewy from the peanut butter and crunchy from roasted peanut bits. The last cookie that we sampled was the King of New York, a gluten-free dark chocolate cookie filled with salted pretzel pieces, which was more on the crunchy side, but nevertheless satisfying.
$2.75 will get you a generously sized cookie that's baked daily, but if you pop into the store early enough in the day, you'll be able to walk out with $1 day-old cookies that retain the moisture and chewiness of their fresh counterparts. With so many unique flavor options, it's unlikely that you'll stick to just the chocolate chip, so opt for their two for $5 deal and call it a day.
