Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
Since opening in March, Spreads Sandwich Shop on 30th & Park has been selling a fairly standard, but somewhat inventive menu of sandwiches, soups, and salads, with a stronger emphasis on to-go offerings than their sister restaurant, Dishes, that also stands out in the endless wasteland of Paxes and Prets that is Midtown. Their Turkey ($9.50) and Schnitzel ($10.75) sandwiches did not disappoint.
The "smoked" turkey isn't tremendously smoky, but it is flavorful and juicy, and Aleppo-pickled roasted peppers and spicy chipotle mayo add a mild but pleasant heat, tempered by the monterey jack. The inclusion of avocado and crumbled tortilla chips effectively adds a layer of chips and guac into the mix, but manages to do it in a way that seems neither excessive nor gimmicky. It's unusual, but not for the sake of being unusual, and we approve. This is a mighty solid turkey sandwich.
The chicken schnitzel is similarly satisfying, with the same peppers providing the same mild heat, but a kale slaw added a little bite and a nice tang, bolstered by a garlic aioli. The schnitzel itself was a little thick, more cutlet than proper schnitzel, and a little bland but still pleasant.
Both sandwiches were served on toasted ciabatta, which was nicely crispy even after a long trip back to the office spent soaking in a generously soggy mess of mayo.
Spreads' sandwiches are balanced, flavorful, and inventive enough to excite, but simple enough to satisfy on a regular basis. And given their Midtown location, they have a big leg up on the competition.
