For a lot of people, the word "vegan" conjures up negative thoughts when it comes to sweets. But I think that's an outdated perspective. These days, many of New York City's top restaurants now offer vegan desserts with just as much "wow" factor as their dairy-containing counterparts. And some high-end vegan sweets are hard to even identify as being dairy-free.
Every dessert deserves to be judged on its own merits, free from any prejudices or preconceived notions. The Vegan Chewy Chocolate Sunflower Cookie ($2.75) from Body and Soul Bakery lives up to its name—it is both very chewy and highly chocolatey.
The deep chocolate flavor comes from copious amounts of cocoa powder, enough to give the cookie a nearly black appearance. The chewiness is best described in terms of the cookie's flexibility. The cookie is easily bendable but not easily breakable. If you held it by the very edge, it would not droop or break off.
A generous coating of sunflower seeds adds some texture and contributes to the feeling (true or not) that you are eating something healthy instead of a chocolate cookie.
