Hot Bread Kitchen in East Harlem is a bakery concept that everyone can get behind. They are a not-for-profit that hires and trains low-income immigrant women in the art of baking to help them achieve economic independence.

In addition to having the best bialys in New York, they also sell conchas (Mexican sweet bread) for $2 each. If you've never tried conchas before, their sweetness and texture is similar to challah bread. However, they have a smooth layer of baked sugar and cinnamon on top that forms a thin crust. Their appearance always reminds me of a scoop of ice cream for some reason. Hot Bread Kitchen sells them in chocolate and vanilla variations at their retail space in La Marqueta and at various Greenmarkets.

Tip: If you visit Hot Bread's outpost in La Marqueta, be sure stop by Dorie Greenspan's Beurre & Sel for a fresh-made cookie or two.
