Last week we reported that Intellegentsia Coffee opened their first branch in New York City in the lobby of the High Line Hotel. After reading that they were planning to feature baked goods by Mah Ze Dahr Bakery (a collaboration between Umber Ahmad, a "world traveled passionate foodie," and Tom Colicchio), I made the trip over to the pastry case.
The dark chocolate brownie ($3.50) from Mah Ze Dahr was fantastic. For me, the best brownies are super rich and chocolatey without becoming a slice of flowerless chocolate cake or square of solid fudge—and this meets both those standards. Every bite brings a soft cake-like texture and a distinct dark chocolate flavor. The chunks of softened dark chocolate add more textural interest than chips.
The butter cookie, though a bit pricey at $1.50 each, is also well executed. The texture has a little bit of a snap to it, but is still buttery and crumbly. Think Christmas cookies, pre-icing.
The entire lower half of the pastry case at Intelligentsia features the excellent croissants, pain au chocolat, and other savory items from Bien Cuit as well.
