A Sandwich a Day: Parms at M & O Market and Deli

A Sandwich a Day

A new sandwich every day.

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

On the edge of Soho, away from the mall-like conditions of Broadway and Lafeyette is M & O Market and Deli, an unassuming shop on the corner of Thompson and Prince Street.

At first glance M & O appears to be only an unremarkable bodega, but tucked in the very back of the store is a deli with surprisingly tasty sandwiches. The options range from basic deli classics to some very good house specialties

Grab a bread of your choice (roll or hero) and tell the men behind the counter your order. This visit was all about the meatballs and chicken cutlet ($7.50 each), both "Parm"-ified for an additional 50 cents. Tomato sauce and mozzarella will turn the bread soggy fast, but the sandwiches still hold together well with all the ingredients in good balance. The chicken is a little drier than we would like, but the meatballs squish down into tender, juicy, well seasoned patties.

Nothing ground-breaking here, but both are good options if you're in the neighborhood for a quick lunch. They're not as good as the deli's pastrami, but they're more frequently available and solid lunch options, if not something to go out of your way for.
