If you've been following our coverage of Breads Bakery, then you know baker Uri Scheft and team have been creating some great breads, babka, and rugelach. But they're also buying fresh produce from the nearby Union Square Farmer's Market to make some very good specialty pastry.
Their seasonal pear tart, available in two sizes ($2.95 individual, $23.95 large) is beautiful to look at. The pastry shell is crumbly and fresh-tasting, and the pears are cooked to softness but not mush. A thick layer of slivered almonds coats the top adding a subtle crunch to each bite. Overall, this tart is refreshingly not too sweet.
Breads Bakery told me they expect to offer many more seasonal pastries as new produce becomes available.
