Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
The coconut curry lamb from Xe Máy was our introduction to the sandwich shop's twists on the classic Vietnamese sandwich. The "Hog" ($6), with its flavorful grilled pork, is truer to banh mi form, but takes a unique turn with the addition of scallion oil and fried shallots.
Both ingredients add an earthy, onion-y kick that helps cut through the richness of the meat, and the black pepper-heavy pickling liquid that turns carrots and daikon from sweet to tart is an unexpected pleasure. Chili mayo adds a whisper of heat, but order the sandwich spicy (with jalapeño and Sriracha) and you'll get one of the better pork banh mi we've had of late.
