Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
Don't look for the Iskender Plate ($14.50 to go, $16.95 to stay) near the other Turkish sandwiches at 7 Spices in the East Village. You won't find it there because it technically isn't a sandwich—that is, until you DIY it into one.
The Iskender is a heaping pile of juicy thinly shaved crisp-edged lamb over yogurt-soaked pita, with roasted tomato and tomato sauce on the side. As-is, it's more than enough for one. Add a side order of Turkish bread ($2.25 to go, $3.25 to stay) and you have a huge sandwich lunch for two. The puffy, nicely crusty bread is more than a foot long; tear it in half and you still have a more than ample cradle for your share of lamb and yogurt.
So yes, it's about $20 to make this happen, but it's a meal and then some for two, and frankly the best lamb-pita combination we've enjoyed in the East Village in a while.
