Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
Some say the journey is better than the destination, but that's not the case with a trip to Artie's Delicatessen on the Upper West Side. A trip on the 1 train pales in comparison to what's put in front of you minutes after ordering Artie's Own Roumanian Pastrami Sandwich ($13.45). First there's anticipation, then the sensory overload sets in. The sandwich reaches the vertical heights of other overstuffing deli specialists around the city, but nowhere else does the pastrami melt in your mouth quite like it does on Broadway and 83rd.
Artie's pastrami has crisp burnt edges, but they soften up between pieces of rye bread as the fresh sliced pastrami lets off steam. It almost steams the sandwich from the inside out, making the already delicate, buttery pastrami even softer. You can order the sandwich with mustard, but the only thing it needs is two hands and a mouth.
