A Sandwich a Day: Rueben at John Brown Smokehouse

A Sandwich a Day

A new sandwich every day.

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

The new location of John Brown Smokehouse is down a quiet Long Island City side street, but it continues to draw larger and larger crowds for its barbecue.

Among the best of their 'cue is fatty, amply seasoned pastrami, which you can order solo ($22/pound) or in a Reuben Sandwich ($12.50).* There's nothing small about this sandwich: the pastrami is stacked high, the slice of Swiss is nice and thick, and the impressively delicious coleslaw doesn't disappoint.

* Which with its pastrami and coleslaw is really a Rachel.

The pastrami is fall-apart tender, with enough spices in the rub to keep every bite interesting—though the focus remains on the meat. There's almost too much of it in this sandwich, but a simple solution was pulling out some slices...and then eating them anyway.
