When we find ourselves craving tasty, affordable Mexican grub, a trip to Tulcingo del Valle in Hell's Kitchen is often not far behind. That's how I found myself with the Huevo con Chorizo Torta ($6.50), a sandwich that's a steal for its size, with generous fillings crammed between a halved bun that may have once been fluffy but is now smashed thin.
The main players are eggs scrambled with plenty of mildly spiced chorizo, pickled jalapenos, and a smear of creamy refried pinto beans on the bottom. The remaining ingredients are supporting characters and do more for the sandwich's texture than flavor: crisp lettuce, sliced red onion, sliced tomato, cheese, and a smidge of guacamole.
The bread's a little more chewy than you'd expect for a soft torta, but the egg, sausage, and pickled chilies hit all the notes you want. Mexican craving: accomplished.
