Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
Reason #4572 why I love New York City: we have places like Mr. Broadway Kosher Deli. The extended name, according to the take-out bag:
It is in fact Glatt Kosher, which explains the clientele, as well as the spit of chicken shawarma that's only one of many menu options. Others run the gamut from Jewish deli classics to steam table Chinese to sushi you should probably avoid.
I appreciate places like Mr. Broadway, but I rarely visit them for lunch since the quality is usually pretty low. But when a trustworthy source recommended their chicken shawarma despite its $12 price tag, we decided to give it a shot.
And a stand-up shawarma it is: tender and juicy, with serious smokiness and a solid bark on the crisp edges. It's light on the spices, allowing the chicken to stay the focus, for good and for ill: it's an honestly flavored shawarma, but we wouldn't mind a little more flavor. Especially considering that the fresh fluffy pita so deserves it.
So ask for the nutty tahini and thin chili-herb sauces, and be sure to hit up the salad bar (included in the price of the shawarma) for some fixings. We bulked up on pickle-y cauliflower, beets, carrots, and peppers, all pungent with dill, black pepper, and brine. Put it all together for a very nice (and filling) midtown Kosher lunch.
