I don't believe there is such a thing as just one perfect chocolate chip cookie, but the ones from Amanda Cook at Cookshop come very close. You'll want to come early in the morning for these gems ($2.50), which are sold alongside other baked goods at the coffee bar counter opened from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. daily. If muffins can count as breakfast food, there's no reason why cookies can't. Ooey gooey when still fresh from the oven, they're rich but balanced with a crisp exterior that sinks right into that warm melty center, with shards of milk chocolate and a bit of salt. Brown sugar gives it a bit of chew and rounded sweetness—I'd be happy eating even just the dough. Nothing fancy, just honest and satisfying. And even better with cold milk.
