Even though restaurants are hurting pretty badly now, many have found ways to join in with relief efforts around the city. Momofuku and Cafe Boulud will be teaming up tonight for a six-course, $500 benefit dinner for the Red Cross. Twelve food trucks are giving out 11,000 free meals across the boroughs.*
* Why aren't there more food trucks out and about? Sandy Kovich of the Red Hook Lobster Pound (which has a food truck) told us yesterday that diesel fuel is scare, and trucks can't run without it.
The New York Times, Eater, and Grubstreet are all compiling lists of restaurants offering special dinners for relief. That also includes efforts like the Brooklyn Kitchen accepting donations to be trucked out to the Rockaways. (As Robicellis cupcakes reminds us, Red Cross and FEMA relief hasn't been spread evenly across the city, and some of the neighborhoods farthest from downtown Manhattan are the hardest hit.)
We're also collecting photos of restaurants giving back (such as this incredible shot of Motorino making pizza in the dark by hand). If you have any you'd like us to share, email them to [email protected].
Update 4:36 p.m.: We hear some updates from Hot Bread Kitchen. They're offering pay-what-you-can prices on bread at their uptown location, Hot Bread Almacen, and they're also donating bread to organizations that can pick it up (email [email protected]).
Update 5:31 p.m.: ALDEA will host a benefit dinner for local communities in need on Wednesday, November 7th starting at 7 p.m., with dishes cooked by George Mendes, Andrew Carmellini, Marco Canora, Seamus Mullen, and Shelly Acuna. Tickets are $300; reserve by emailing [email protected].
Telepan will be hosting a dinner on Monday, November 5th starting at 7.p.m., $200 for four courses with wine pairings, with all proceeds going to the Mayor's fund for hurricane relief. Call 212-580-4300 for reservations.
Update 11/5: Uptown restaurants like Casellula, Ardesia, Danji, and more are organizing aid for downtown restaurants and staff in need of financial relief from their week of closures at liftsall.org.
