I've never been big on beets, but the Beet Sandwich ($5.50) at Ba'al Cafe & Falafel may have changed my mind. Their ultra-creamy hummus cuts the earthiness of the beets, resulting in a smooth bite that is rich and substantial, while letting the bites of beet shine through. Stuffed into a doughy pita with a crunchy and refreshing cucumber salad, this is a filling little pocket of Middle Eastern deliciousness. And for a little over five bucks a pop, it's just as good as nearby boutique Soho lunch spots for a fraction of the cost.
