Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
Eggplant and egg on a croissant? With potato salad and harissa? How could this possibly be any good? How stoned did someone have to be to come up with the idea?
But we heard some very nice things about Zizi Limona in Williamsburg, enough to give this Sabih Croissant ($10 at lunch, $11 at dinner) a try. And I'll be damned if it's not the best croissant sandwich I've ever tasted.
Granted that's a low bar, but consider: gorgeously smoky eggplant, just-spiced-enough potatoes, the tangy sweetness of a cooked-down tomato. Add cilantro that's more aromatic than it has any right to, and a gentle but pitch-perfect dressing to tie it all together. Call this a salad and you're straight into lunch happy times.
Suddenly the croissant comes into focus. Salad and a croissant? We can get that. Especially when it's this flaky and light, its pores soaking up the dressing ever so slightly.
So croissantwiches everywhere: consider yourselves warned that the bar is raised—very high indeed. And Zizi Limona: we'll be back.
