In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know.—The Mgmt.
Everything you need to know about eating and cooking with curds
The recently opened Astoria Bier & Cheese (connected to Astoria Wine & Spirits next door) is an exciting place for the neighborhood: part craft beer store, part cheese shop, and part hangout spot. And it fills a worthy need: in a neighborhood with some very good mozzarella and spectacular feta, it's still a little tough to find a worthy gruyere.
The shop offers an impressive selection of craft beers and cheeses, both to-go and for on-the-spot beer and cheese plates, all bolstered by a small menu that showcases some of their products. The Grilled Cheese ($7) is an easy, obvious choice, and worth ordering. Thick-cut slices of country bread hold a trio of fresh mozzarella, cheddar, and raclette, calibrated to be gooey and bold but still plenty accessible. Cornichons in the sandwich tart it up nicely, but when you order yours it might be best to stop there. The spread of pungent mustard they add covers up some of the cheesy nuance, and with this much delicious dairy it's a little unnecessary. Still, a solid, pleasingly nutty-tasting grilled cheese sandwich from a new boon to the neighborhood.
