A Sandwich A Day: Chicken Shawarma at Hummus & Pita Co.

A Sandwich a Day

A new sandwich every day.

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Walking into Chelsea's Hummus & Pita Co., I was greeted by the sight of hot puffed pitas and roasted meats spinning on spits. The large assembly line counter makes the place feel like a Chipotle where falafel and hummus has replaced carnitas and guacamole.

Though there are lots of options for stuffing your pita (or laffa), we went with the Chicken Shawarma ($6.95) in a whole wheat pita with cucumber salad and harissa. The chicken is juicy and but a little under-seasoned, the cucumber salad is crisp and fresh, and the harissa is fiery in a way that few are.

Each topping and sauce is charged a la carte after the first two, so you could end up building quite the expensive sandwich if you let your imagination run wild (sure I'll have my gyro with baba ganoush, Morrocan beans, chimichurri, and schug!)

This isn't the best shawarma you'll ever have—the ingredients don't quite build on each other the way they should in such a sandwich—but the the myriad customizable options is is enough to bring me back if I need a quick lunch in the neighborhood.
