Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
Though I've walked down the the lowest stretch of Baxter Street many times before (pretty much always on my way to Tasty Dumpling), I'd never noticed Paulie's Place, a small counter-and-a-few tables hole in the wall serving deli standards. It was packed at one o'clock with office workers who had the air of regulars about them.
The Grilled Cheese ($2) was dripping with grease, which, judging by the strong faux-butter flavor, came from a healthy dousing of margarine. This might not be for everyone, but hear me out on the positive aspects of this sandwich: it was nicely grilled, with a good amount of gooey yellow American cheese on sliced whole wheat (they also offer white and rye). The bread was evenly browned, without a hint of my personal grilled cheese pet peeve (what's yours?), which is when the center of the bread is toasty but the crusts remain fluffy, and the corners of the cheese retain squared, unmelted edges. Also, did you notice that this sandwich is two dollars? It is! Two dollars! In Manhattan!
This grease ball isn't the best thing you'll ever eat, and you might feel less than wholesome when it's all gone, but for a two-buck non-Chinese food option in Chinatown, it definitely deserves a shout out.
