Taboonette's Calamari Pita ($8.25) is good stuff, but that's not surprising considering how much we love their sandwiches and other plates. Although you can get this calamari in a large laffa wrap or with a rice plate for $9.75, the fluffy pita is our favorite squid delivery vehicle.
Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
It's stuffed with sautéed calamari, tzaziki, chimichuri, hummus, olive oil, and a salad of cherry tomato, watercress, and arugula with herbs. The calamari is tender, not chewy at all; and if chimichurri sounds out of place for Taboonette's "Mediterranean" cooking, rest assured its blend of garlic, parsley, oregano, and white wine vinegar spices the calamari well and provides the bright acidity that is always so wonderful with seafood. The salad is crisp and fresh, and the hummus that subtly coats the walls of the pita acts a tasty glue to keep everything in place.
