Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
For a while I've wondered about Curry & Tandoor Corner on Broome Street, the Indian takeout place that seems to have gotten lost in the middle of Chinatown/Little Italy. What's it doing here? And could it be any good?
That depends. Are you looking for fresh, vibrant, cleverly spiced Indian cooking? Look elsewhere. But if you're you're having an uneasy morning that needs something trashy-delicious, like mayo-covered kebabs wrapped in naan, this Sheek Kebab Kati Roll is a pretty decent $5 thing to eat.
It's really an Indian-style gyro, with a spiced minced chicken kebab in place of lamb and a piece of naan instead of pita. The dense kebab is pretty nice: there's a strong curry powder vibe that you can see and taste, and it has the bounciness of a good emulsified sausage. The naan's better than you'd expect: very fluffy, if a little doughy, and it picks up some char spots well. There's some iceberg too, but it's pretty inessential. Not the mayo, though—and it doesn't even pretend to be yogurt. And you know what? It makes me want to try mayo on a lot more kebabs.
Sometimes a trashy, mayo-y, spicy starch tube is all you really want or need. This serves that purpose quite well.
