Everything you need to know about eating and cooking with curds
The newly-opened Porsena Extra Bar—so new there is no sign up yet—is next door to the dinner-only original, and offers a daytime menu that is loosely Mediterranean before transforming into a bar space at night. Options include cured meat sandwiches, mezze appetizers like roasted red pepper purée, salads, and pasta dishes.
The Grilled Kimcheese ($8) makes an enticing pun, and as it turns out, a tasty sandwich. The thick-cut griddled pullman bread is soft and buttery, the filling a mix of puréed kimchi that adds bright heat to nutty aged cheddar and creamy mayo. The cheese-meets-mayo mix sure is rich, but gets balanced by that kimchi tang to keep this from becoming a cheesy gut-bomb.
It's a funky, spicy take on the lunchtime classic, though best eaten in-house, not to go; the crust did get soggy after a 15-minute walk back to our office. It's also a good value for the price, much more so than a $9 gem lettuce salad with meager flakes of herring, or another sandwich (salami with figs) with good flavors, but in too small a package to make a filling lunch.
