The burger and meat-based sandwiches at Tortaria need some work, but they've nailed their vegetarian option down. Although the Crispy Eggplant torta ($7.81) promises a crispy eggplant experience, the panko breaded slice on the sandwich is a few notches from such a description. Still, the eggplan't flavor is stronger than most and the disc wasn't in any way soggy. Moreover, the toppings, which were great on the burger, are even better on the less offensive vegetarian substitute.
Pickled jalapeños bring a touch of heat to the sandwich, while Chihuahua cheese cools it down. Fresh cilantro, which is treated more like a green than an herb at Tortaria, threatens to overwhelm the insides, but the splash of Chipotle barbecue mayo tones down its verdant intensity. Quality tomatoes and guacamole finish off the sandwich, adding fresh flavors and textural contrast.
But the bread is my favorite part. Before anybody snaps, it isn't torta bread by any. Instead, it's a rather delicious white roll that gets a quick toasting before receiving its fillings. A crunchy top and sturdy build (amidst plenty of wet toppings) make this bread one of the better buns around. Tortaria may be meat-challenged, but when the cooks swap in a lighter vegetarian option and keep the toppings flowing, there's a pretty tasty sandwich to be had.
