You might not know it, but there's something missing in your life, and it comes in a styrofoam cup with a spoon and straw. Snoballs are a Caribbean frozen dessert that will make you forget all about those sad, corn syrupy snow cones of years past, and Kafi Dublin's Noho pop-up stand, An Icy Introduction, does them very well. With over eighty flavors for your shaved ice, there is literally something for everyone, including sugar-free and condensed milk-soaked options (Kafi calls the latter a snocream). Based on the impressive list on Kafi's site, we decided to stop by and see what was going on at this low key stand.
On our visit, we tried two flavors: Ginger Beer ($4 for a small, a classic flavor, according to Kafi) and the Antidepressant ($5 for a small, one of the condensed milk numbers). Every snoball starts with finely shaved ice that spits out of a machine like snow from a blower. After overstuffing a small styrofoam cup (although small may be an understatement), Kafi goes to town with the flavored syrups, which she makes with raw sugar. The resultant treat doesn't look like much, but it's incredibly true to flavor. In the Ginger Beer, intense ginger hits you with the first spoonful and continues to please, without being cloying, even when the syrup and melted ice mix at the end.
The Antidepressant plays so differently it's difficult to imagine it comes from the same stand. Chocolate-Coffee syrup gets laid down before Kafi dresses the snoball with generous squirts of dulce de leche and condensed milk. What do you get? The frappucino of the century, with a healthy dose of coffee and plenty of milk and sugar (chocolate helps too). Condensed milk may get tiresome in a taste test, but it's perfectly at home in Kafi's creations. Our recommendation: go here now, you won't regret it.
