Since opening in 2008, No. 7 has become a mini-empire with sandwich shops in the Ace Hotel, The Plaza, and Greenpoint, not to mention a robust catering operation on the side. But the cocktails and decidedly non-lunch food continue to draw local and destination diners to the original 7 Greene Street location.
One particular draw: the fried broccoli ($8). A giant floret of broccoli—dipped in thick batter and fried to form a firm, crispy shell—arrives nearly dwarfing the black bean purée it rests on. Once sawed into edible pieces, this broccoli bomb becomes a more manageable snack. The crust, the still-crunchy broccoli, the smooth black bean purée, and the tangy citrus salad make for great flavor and texture contrast. The broccoli itself is the best part: it's steamed just enough to be tender, but retains all its freshness. No wonder this dish has remained on No. 7's menu for years.
