We're always happy to taste the latest sandwiches from Tom Colicchio's 'wichcraft, one of the more reliable and tasty options for your workday lunch. This season they're reintroducing four sandwiches for summer breakfasts and lunch. Our thoughts on the lot:
Breakfast: Asparagus Frittata ($6.88)
Here we find a thick layer of egg, reminiscent of a McMuffin in the best of ways. The moist egg took on the full flavor of the fresh asparagus. Aged cheddar underneath gives a textural benefit, but we would've appreciated stronger flavor. Truth be told, the fluffy ciabatta roll was the real star. An egg sandwich on ciabatta can't lose.
Free-range Chicken Salad ($9.64)
This was a great chicken salad. The chicken is flavorful, moist, and comes with just the right amount of mayo. Walnuts, pickled red onions, roasted tomatoes, and frisée all serve as friendly companions. 7-grain bread is a solid match-up to the salad.
Blackened Flank Steak ($9.87)
This spicy steak sandwich featured tender, moist meat and sweet, crunchy grilled onions. The nutty romesco acts a little like a red pepper pesto, and it's a great addition to steak. According to the menu, there was aged cheddar on there, but with all the other flavors going on, it was sort of undetectable.
Zucchini & Mozzarella ($7.12)
This is your basic panino. In addition to its namesake ingredients there's basil, parmesan and roasted tomatoes. The vegetables and herbs are impressively bright, and though it's not terribly exciting, it's a solid vegetarian option. There's a good cheese-to-vegetable ratio and plenty of flavor to make for a satisfying, if light lunch.
