Turkey is a tough meat to master on a sandwich. Even when it's delicious, it doesn't necessarily merit enthusiasm. But the Smoked Turkey and Cheddar($9.00) at Iris is totally a sandwich I can get behind. The turkey has a strong, smoky, almost ham-like flavor. The cheddar is sharp and bright orange, and the quick pickle layered on top is as fun to say as it is tasty. The cranberry-pecan toast is a perfect vehicle for the whole thing: it adds a touch of sweetness, plus it's soft, yet totally stable even under ambitious bites. The dijon-mayo is just the touch of creaminess I was hoping to find there. In a world of serviceable but average turkey sandwiches, this one stands apart.
