An slice of plain chocolate cake is surprisingly difficult to find in NYC. Flourless chocolate cakes, molten chocolates, triple chocolate cakes, chocolate cakes with layered with buttercream and others with ganache and whipped cream: sure. But just plain chocolate cake? Rare! Luckily, they turn them out from time to time at One Girl Cookies (the cake-by-the-slice offerings change daily). If you spot it, do yourself a favor and take home a slice ($3.75) or two. It's a simple, textbook dark chocolate cake done well, moist with even, loose crumbs. Not too chocolatey and hardly rich, you wouldn't call the cake special, but it satisfies that one craving perfectly.
If you get there early enough for breakfast, keep in mind that One Girl Cookies also offers housemade yogurt, which is thick and tangy. It's a complete meal when you opt to add in stewed seasonal fruit (cinnamon-accented pears and apples on my last visit), and a generous scoop of granola.
