A Sandwich A Day: Prosciutto Mozzarella at Faicco's

A Sandwich a Day

A new sandwich every day.

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year--so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know.—The Mgmt.

When it comes to Italian delis in the West Village, Faicco's reigns supreme. It's a genuine institution in the West Village, for a slew of tasty reasons. There's an appetizing array of prepared Italian specialties, all fresh pesto and eggplant dishes. Then, there are the very popular sausages, which come in a variety of flavors, including homemade broccoli rabe and fennel flavored links. But the main reason Faicco's commands such a legion of vocal fans is its sandwiches, which inspire seriously daunting lines come lunchtime.

To say that the sandwiches are large is a profound understatement—these are sized for linebackers, and hungry ones at that. There's an extensive selection of combinations, which can all be custom tailored to fit all your toppings needs. Prosciutto and Mozzarella ($11.75) is a particularly great option. Be sure to add some sweet red peppers, lettuce, and perhaps some mustard if you swing that way. The subtle sweetness of the peppers, when combined with layers upon layers of rich, salty prosciutto is near addictive. With this much meat on a sandwich, you'll definitely be set for lunch, and a late afternoon snack too.
