Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
There are a lot of things to love about Mimi's Hummus in Ditmas Park, but their excellent weekday lunch special may be at the top of my list. For just $9, you can get a sizable, seriously delicious pita sandwich and a generous side serving of any of their vegetable salads. I opted for the Iraqi sandwich ($7 without the salad), a messy pile of hummus, spicy cilantro, sliced potato, hard boiled egg, and pan fried eggplant, plus a side of their addictive cauliflower salad ($2 extra). The sandwich, while difficult to eat neatly, was a wonderful combination of flavors and textures—the creamy base of hummus, the kick from the cilantro, and the smoky-sweet eggplant, which remained nicely greaseless despite being pan fried. Bulked out by the potato and egg, the sandwich would have made for a plenty filling lunch, but somehow, I managed to take down the tahini- and parsley-laced cauliflower as well.
