New Spring Flavors from Popbar

The offerings from the West Village's Popbar combine the best qualities of gelato—its dense creaminess and purity of flavor—with the self-contained convenience of a popsicle. Sorbet pops, also available, hew closer to the standard fruit ice flavor normally associated with frozen treats. Pops range from $3.99 to $4.99 in price, and a variety of "poppings," such as granola and chopped pistachios, are available, as are white, milk, and dark chocolate dips. We tried Popbar's two new spring flavors: peanut butter gelato and kiwi sorbet.

Who can resist the combination of peanut butter and chocolate? The popMan who sold me my bar was insistent that I get it dipped; I opted for dark chocolate. The dip was a wise choice, as the gelato, although smooth and creamy, was light on peanutty flavor: on its own, it wouldn't make a super enjoyable treat. If you're a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup fan, try a milk chocolate dip for a frozen version of the classic candy.

Vivid green in color and not too sweet, the kiwi sorbet makes a refreshing summer pop. My favorite part? The crunchy seeds scattered throughout. I got my pop au naturel, but I think a "popping" of shredded coconut would up the tropical ante of this popsicle.
