Open for a few years now, Carroll Gardens' Karloff has drawn accolades for its spacious, low-key vibe and Eastern European offerings. A standout from this comfort food menu are their hand-shredded potato latkes ($7), accompanied by eggs, grilled veggies, sausages, or lox. As Passover nears, I found myself needing a latke fix stat, so I decided to size these fried pancakes up.
Grilled vegetables keep the fried latke in check. You're given the choice of ketchup or hot sauce; the hot sauce is a pleasant surprise, a Georgian "chilly sauce" by Golden Fleece. Slightly sweet, it was the perfect accompaniment for Karloff's crisp, not-too greasy latkes. Fried fiends, take note: Karloff's latkes make appearances on their breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menus, so you can get your fix whenever.
