The pastry chefs at Cha-An love using puff pastry; that one component plays an important part in a good number of their desserts. The newest creation is this Layered Strawberry Pie ($8.50), featuring puffy, butter-rich rectangles of baked puff pastry. Each piece is dusted with powdered sugar and layered with vanilla bean cream and macerated strawberries. On the side, vanilla ice cream with smashed berries—think blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries, swirled throughout. It's not the best ice cream as the texture is slightly inconsistent, but you could do much worse. A sweet sesame seed tuile for a final flourish; and we'd recommend you get a warm pot of tea on the side. We are, after all, at a tea house.
