Brooklyn neighborhood favorite Apartment 138 has been racking up some major buzz for its trademark burger. It is indeed quite delicious: a thick beef patty, a generous melted layer of cheddar, tomato compote, and a housemade pickle to boot. So it's no surprise that there are serious lines come the weekend, when the unbeatable deal of a burger and bloody mary/mimosa can be yours for just $16 (the burger on its own is usually $14).
By comparison, the other equally delectable burger option at Apartment 138 flies under the radar. The vegetarian alternative, the Housemade Beet Burger ($12), is one of the tastiest and most creative non-meat burgers I've encountered. It forgoes the traditional meat patty in favor of a vibrantly colored and deceptively firm burger patty made of beets. The patty is sandwiched by a generous, surprisingly light and airy toasted sesame bun.
A subtle layer of lemon-whipped feta and a smattering of arugula offset the burger's beetiness. They compliment the beet nicely, but the whipped feta could have used a bit more punch. These ingredients may remind you of a salad, but the beet's firm, meaty texture deceives you into thinking you're eating something quite burger-like.
The burger comes with fries or an arugula salad. The salad was over-dressed, far too vinegary and salty, and didn't add much to the meal. But truth be told, this burger doesn't need any accompaniments—it's that good.
