Lunch Today: The Smile To Go
Lunchtime adventures from the Serious Eats editors.

We've written about The Smile before, just close enough to the Serious Eats World Headquarters to merit a trip or two for a casual sandwich lunch. Naturally, when we heard the Bond Street restaurant was opening a take-away outpost right around the corner from our office on Howard Street, we just had to pop our heads in and say hello.

The Smile To Go features a rotating daily menu changing with the availability of ingredients and the whims of the chefs. We sampled a chicken salad cranberry sandwich with a side order of apple lacuna kale and roasted beet salad (small salads $4 each). The sandwich was perfectly tasty but not as interesting as we'd expect something from The Smile to be. The salads, however, were much better. The kale retained the greens' characteristic flavor, only altered through a sprinkling of oil and vinegar and a few sweet apple slices. The roasted beet salad also remained true to its star ingredient, earthy and slightly sweet, with a few chunks of mild feta mixed subtly throughout. For a few fresh salads, they did just fine.
