In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
Sometimes small sandwiches can be the most satisfying, especially when they erupt with porky juice on first bite. This pork and cabbage pancake ($1.50) is an even more portable version of Tasty Dumpling's gorgeously juicy pork and cabbage potsticker filling. The slightly dry bun (much like what you'd find in Xi'an's burgers, but a little more substantial) softens and becomes saturated with juices from the filling.
This is a small bite, but it's plenty rich, so it'll fill you up faster than you think. (It's also a very cute bite, so we couldn't resist drawing the obvious face on it.) Tasty Dumpling's rich pork filling is one of our favorites in Chinatown, and the cabbage offers a mellow vegetal backbone and mild sweetness. Take it to go with some unsweetened iced tea and chow down in the nearby park. You'll want to eat this outside—not just for the fine weather, but as insurance against a messy pork juicesplosion.
