A visit out to Mitsuwa Marketplace in Edgewater is heaven for those with an affection for Japanese sweets (or savories!). However you decide to map our your day at this Japanese supermarket and food court, you'll need to finish with soft-serve. It's just $3 for a generous cup/cone and you can pick from flavors like green tea, vanilla bean, black sesame, and hojicha. They're each potent and pure, though hojicha is currently at the top of my rotation, perfectly smooth in texture with that distinct flavor of roasted tea. The only place in the city that offers something close is the hojicha ice cream at Kyo-Ya in the East Village. If you're feeling indulgent, follow up with a cone of the black sesame soft-serve, nutty and rounded in flavor, a soothing charcoal grey in color. For those who would rather not drive out to Mitsuwa, the supermarket offers a shuttle bus which runs out of Port Authority.
