Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
We've already written about the tacos from Tacos Morelos, an awesome taco cart in the East Village that's little brother to a cart in Williamsburg and one in Queens, but they've got sandwiches as well. One of the selections was a chile relleno torta ($5). Overall it was a tasty sandwich--but this was a situation where the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.
The torta roll was soft and fluffy, without much of a crisp; beneath the top bun was a poblano stuffed with creamy white cheese and fried with a crispy light breading. The cheese inside, though it had a nice mild flavor, didn't deliver any satisfying ooze, but the pepper had great flavor with just a little heat on the end. Underneath that was shredded lettuce, tomato, another slice of the cheese (also not melty) a thin spreading of refried beans, and the bottom bun. When dissected, the torta revealed some unmemorable components, but altogether cheese, bread, and pepper delivered a substantial, flavorful bite.
