The owner of Chocolate Bar in the West Village recently opened a bakery by the name of Doughboy Bake Shop just a few blocks south on Hudson Street. Cupcakes (especially the pumpkin one!) are the draw at this all-American bakery, but don't be quick to dismiss their other sweets. Offerings change frequently; expect to find everything from a big crumbly and chewy snickerdoodle cookie to peanut butter pound cake, whole cherry pies and much, much more. Cake slices sit on the top counter and if you spy this Chocolate-Pear Cake, don't miss out. It's a tiny but potent slice, all dark chocolate with toasted ground almonds mixed into the batter for crunch. A bounty of pear wedges pressed in at half-inch intervals guarantee perfectly moist bites, a balance between decadent and fresh.
