Honolulu-based Bubbies Mochi Ice Cream was a favorite treat of mine growing up in Hawai'i. You can get them now frozen at most Whole Foods stores nationwide, but it just doesn't taste the same transported and shipped thousands of miles away. A "fresh" batch is always better, so keep your eye out for Sweet Fusion NYC this weekend at Smorgasburg. Handmade mochi ice cream balls are $5 apiece, and gigantic in size (about three of Bubbies put together). Soft, chewy, lightly sweet mochi is wrapped around various flavors of ice creams and sorbets. Imagine concoctions like cherry-passionfruit (pictured above), slightly tart and made with fresh cherries; coffee; a silky summer white peach; and, on another occasion, watermelon-lime with a whisper of honey. It's no Bubbies (nothing could ever be!) but fresh mochi ice cream in New York? That's an awesome thing to have.
