Almond Cookie is my favorite flavor at Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. It's so popular that to say so is practically cliché, but that mix of crushed almond cookies in an almond-scented vanilla ice cream base is incredibly seductive, the flavors spot-on. I most often stop at Chinatown Ice Cream Factory after dinner nearby, but by then, and especially on a Friday or Saturday night, chances are they'll have sold out of Almond Cookie.
What to do? Sundaes and Cones does a better version of taro, black sesame, and matcha, so skip all those. Keep you eyes out for the Dan Tat, creamy yellow egg custard tart ice cream, and the Zen Butter ice cream (pictured above). It's a combination of peanut butter and white sesame seeds. The sesame seeds are toasted, ground up, and blended into a peanut butter base. You taste sesame seeds most prominently; the peanut butter is faint and contributes mainly to the overall (and intense) nuttiness. It's a one-of-a-kind of flavor and one that you won't find at any other ice cream shop in the city.
