Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
When a new shop opens up on a Brooklyn commercial strip like Vanderbilt Avenue, it's more likely than not to be resolutely trendy—hipster dumplings, a great wine-and-small-plates restaurant, a cheffy ramen shop. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But once in awhile, it's sort of reassuring that somewhere a little more old-fashioned can make it, too. The Olde Brooklyn Bagel Shoppe opened a few months back, making all their bagels onsite and selling an extensive, if more-or-less standard list of sandwiches, omelets, and drinks. While they don't quite make my favorite bagels in Brooklyn, there's a lot to like.
Case in point: the egg and bacon with cheese ($3). Everything's done right: the egg flat and set but just a little soft in the very middle; the bacon thick, crisp-edged but still chewy; the cheese melted between bagel and egg. It's a huge breakfast for less than a latte costs anywhere else in the neighborhood. And the bagel itself is structured just right for sandwiches, sturdy but not too sturdy to make a clean bite difficult, fresh enough that it's still warm and a bit crusty without needing a toaster. As a plain bagel, I'd like a little more crust, and a little more flavor, but as an egg-and-cheese delivery vehicle: no complaints.
The people behind Olde Brooklyn Bagel Shoppe also own Middle Eastern restaurant Zaytoon's across the street (and owned a bagel shop in Carroll Gardens some years back)—which explains their labneh spread and za'atar bagels. While I love that idea, the bagel I tried was a little thyme-heavy for my taste, but I'd give it another try.
