A Sandwich A Day: Curry Chicken Salad at Outpost Lounge

A Sandwich a Day

A new sandwich every day.

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

The Outpost Lounge is a gem of a coffee place, and not much of an outpost if you happen to live near the border of Brooklyn neighborhoods Clinton Hill, Bed-Stuy, or Prospect Heights. With an artful tree-like cluster of bared lightbulbs behind the bar and a tiled narrow garden out back, the Lounge has an appropriate Bohemian-hide-out feel, with the carefully-tended coffee to match.

On the sandwich end of things, a caramel-drizzled Brie and Green Apple ($5.75) is minimalist at best, but the Curried Chicken Salad ($5.75) is downright craveable. Made to order (you can watch the barista whip up your salad in a huge metal bowl), the curry-fragrant chicken is spread between two crisply toasted pitas and sprinkled with walnuts and dried cranberries. The chicken salad is what every lonely chicken breast aspires to—tender and just pulled apart, the mayo barely-there, tiny bits of celery dotting the whole ensemble. With a side of nicely-dressed greens and a refreshing Watermelon Lemonade ($2.50), this sandwich is summer on a plate.
