It certainly does douhua, or tofu pudding, injustice by categorizing it as a type of dessert—because it's tasty (and healthy!) enough to be enjoyed anytime. In fact, people in China eat douhua, either savory or sweet or even spicy, for all meals, especially for breakfast; but lunch does the trick, too.
Tung Woo Co. and Kong Kee Food are two tofu specialty stores only a few steps from each other. Both have douhua in the same size of bowl at the same price ($1.25 for small and $1.75 for large), so why not try them both?
Known for their prepared tofu products sold in many Chinese supermarkets, Kong Kee makes silkier and softer douhua that contains less water, with a custard-like consistency. When you stir it with the spoon, it breaks up nicely into small pea-sized pieces that slide down the throat smoothly.
Tung Woo Co.'sdouhua is firmer and just slightly darker in color. They both have a pleasantly intense tofu taste, but the Tung Woo Co. has more of a smoky tofu taste, whereas Kong Kee's is on the mellow side.
They're different enough that I wouldn't call either better than the other; but douhua from either place is much better than the gelatinous, flavorless douhua sold in most bakeries in Chinatown.
