At Danny Meyer's Terrace 5 at the MoMA, pastry sous chef Cristina Nasatasi recently introduced a summery trio of ice cream sundaes. The sundaes are $11.50 each and certainly indulgent enough for two to share. The gelato and sorbets come from Il Laboratorio del Gelato and all the toppings are made in-house. Strawberry Cheesecake Sundae (pictured above) is the most popular of the bunch, coupling both vanilla and strawberry gelato with slices of fresh strawberries tucked between layers of a silky vanilla bean and mascarpone cheesecake. Make sure to dig that spoon in deep; there's a nutty, dusty layer of graham cracker crumble you don't want to miss. A mountain of fresh whipped cream to top; this sundae alone is worth the admission price to visiting the MoMA.
Cristina's favorite of the trio is the Bourbon Pecan Caramel sundae, which couples a seductive, slow-flowing caramel sauce with candied pecans between scoops of vanilla and bourbon pecan gelato. And right behind the strawberry cheese in the photo above is the Mango Pineapple sundae, where fresh mango cubes and roasted pineapples are paired with vanilla gelato and mango sorbet. It's the only one of the three sundaes featuring a sorbet, and perhaps the "lightest" of the trio. Either way, there's a sundae to satisfy each craving and whim. The only hard part is choosing one.
