Lunch To-Go: Fredi Sandwich Bar

It only takes one visit to learn that the bulk of the business at Fredi Sandwich Bar is take-out orders and deliveries. Orders literally fly out during peak lunch hours, and for good reason; they've got affordable and great sandwiches. The Avocado BLT ($6.95) is my regular order; pick your choice of bread from baguette, ciabatta, and Italian hero roll, focaccia, or challah. A sucker for soft sweet breads on savory sandwiches, I go with the challah (how many other places in the city offer you to make any one of their sandwiches on challah bread?). The sliced bread is toasted and brushed with green goddess dressing, then go in layers of extra-crisp turkey bacon, sliced avocado, lettuce, and tomatoes.

But come on the weekends, and they'll do you a Deviled Egg Salad BLT ($7.95). Green goddess dressing is replaced with a dill-heavy herb dressing, and the mayo-laced egg salad is well-seasoned, an ideal creamy foil to the bacon. When a craving for something lighter hits, they've got two salads on the menu: a decent Caesar (ask for dressing on the side, they always put too much), and a simple house salad of mixed greens, carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes. Simple, yes; but also fresh, made to order, and gently priced at $4.95-5.95, something not that easy to find in this neighborhood. Don't forget an order of fries on the side. $3 a hefty basket, they're an excellent deal, fried to order, crisp and thin.
