The Scandinavian restaurant Aquavit quietly launched its Annual Herring Festival this week. The event will last for two weeks (weekdays only, through next Friday) and offers a buffet lunch for $28 per person, a dinner for $38 per person.
There's a good selection of herring for tasting, along with other cold (and largely fish-based) dishes: a whole smoked trout, slices of cured salmon, Swedish-style ham. My favorite is the herring tart, a bite-sized square with flavorful mashed herring layered on a crushed nutty crust, with herb cream on top; the taste is delicate but flavorful. As for dessert, I'd recommend skipping the ordinary strawberry cake in favor of their home-made cookies. (But really, you're there for the herring.)
