Smith & Mills is a tiny Tribeca oasis I tuck into during the day and afternoon when Locanda Verde across the street is too crowded. Here the tiny restaurant and bar set in an old carriage house delivers an excellent Bread Pudding ($8). It's made with torn brioche and served warm, every bite studded with soft and ripe banana chunks. The caramel sauce is loose and lush, and though it may not have that salty-sweet wonder or depth of a more sophisticated caramel sauce, a smattering of toasted pine nuts and fresh whipped cream puts all worries aside. Smith & Mills gets busy in the evenings, but during the day? A little room of peace and quiet.
