If you'd asked me last week where to get a good breakfast burrito in New York, I probably wouldn't have had an answer. And I certainly wouldn't have thought my answer would be Murray's Cheese in the West Village. But Ed stopped by Murray's for a take-out breakfast last Friday, and even though his haul was an hour old by the time we tried it, we were delighted with what we unpacked.
That Breakfast Burrito ($5.99)? It's got a pliant, elastic flour tortilla that's wrapped well, no crumpled-up all-tortilla ends, no gaps or spots where the filling leaks through. The insides are all mashed up together, so you get a little of everything in every bite: tender bacon bits whose delicious fatty juices get everywhere, slickening the super-soft eggs, seeping into the soft potatoes; jalapeño jack cheese melts totally so that it adds a melty, creamy binder, and little pops of heat. Roasted potatoes and caramelized onions complete the package. The best part is how it all comes together—everything sloppy and meaty and just really, really good.
The Breakfast Melt ($5.99) was tasty, too; the bacon is just crisp enough, the egg's a little harder than we would like but has great fried edges, and the Fontina Fontal melts all over everything, seeping into the nooks and crannies of the Bay's English muffin. Though it's a fine breakfast, there are more great breakfast sandwiches in this town than great burritos—so if you're only ordering one, make it the burrito.
